Is air suspension suitable for All terrain vehicles?
The discussion revolves around the suitability of air suspension systems for all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). Participants explore various aspects of air suspension technology, including its potential advantages and disadvantages compared to traditional mechanical spring systems. The conversation includes technical details, personal experiences, and considerations for off-road applications.
Participants do not reach a consensus on the suitability of air suspension for ATVs. Multiple competing views are presented, with some advocating for its use and others highlighting significant drawbacks and limitations.
Participants express varying definitions of air suspension and its components, leading to confusion. There are also unresolved technical details regarding the performance characteristics of air shocks versus traditional systems.
This discussion may be of interest to individuals involved in ATV design, off-road vehicle enthusiasts, and those exploring suspension technologies in automotive engineering.

Ranger Mike said:One final note: unless you come up with some totally new "air suspension" we are stuck with a variant of the tried and true spring/shock design.
4WheelOffRoad.com said:Air shocks are a compromise between a shock and a spring. They are very similar to nitrogen-charged emulsion shocks. However, you will quickly notice that air shocks have a much larger chrome shaft that runs out of the body.

These new air shocks look very much like the coilover shocks used by desert racers and rockcrawlers, but without the coil springs around the outside of the shock body. What really makes folks scratch their head is that no other type of spring is used with air shocks-no coils, leaves, or airbags. The air shock itself works as both spring and shock in a cheap, lightweight, and simple package...
