Alerts->show all , shows latest

Today when I select "show all" from the drop-down menu "Alerts", I see only the latest alert. Is that the way things are supposed to work?

What about notifications of conversations(inbox)?Are these also removed after 3 days?
 
@Greg Bernhardt, could you please explain something to me:

What does "Live Alert Update" mean? It says that's a feature for gold members.
 
The number of alerts gets updated without reloading the page (or changing to a different page).

Oh. It's sad that not everyone has access to that. Oh well.
