Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the characteristics of igneous rocks, specifically whether they can be considered layered. Participants explore the nature of layering in igneous rocks compared to sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that igneous rocks can be layered, though it may not always be obvious.
  • One participant notes that extruded basalt, which cooled on the surface, can show layers or columns that might be considered as layering.
  • There is a comparison made to sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, with a participant stating that these types are more obviously layered.
  • Questions are raised about the classification of granite, with a participant seeking clarification on its basic rock type.
  • Another participant provides a link to a Wikipedia page about granite, indicating a desire for more information.
  • A participant expresses intent to return with further questions regarding chemical changes related to the topic.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the layering of igneous rocks, with differing views on the visibility and classification of layering compared to other rock types.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not resolve the definitions of layering or the classification of granite, leaving some assumptions and terms potentially ambiguous.

They can be but it's not always very obvious
Extruded basalt that flowed on the surface before cooling shows layers or more often columns - if you want to consider these layers

what about sedimentary and metamorphic rocks

More obviosuly layered

so Granite can be classified as what basic rock type

what about granite

ok thanks

will you be around this time tomorrow? I have some questions concerning chemical changes.
