Are Innate Ideas Backed by Science?

In summary, the conversation discusses the concept of innate ideas and whether they can be scientifically proven. The question is raised about what is meant by innate ideas and whether they refer to abstract ideas such as geometric shapes. The possibility of conducting experiments to test for innate ideas is also mentioned. However, it is noted that this would require a specific and testable claim.

The question is too vague -- what you mean by 'innate ideas' needs further specification -- presumably, you mean to question whether the innateness is 'scientifically proven', and not to question whether those ideas which are by some imputed to be innate, are themselves 'scientifically proven'.

Some behaviors evidently require ideation, and some of those have been shown to not require post-natal learning, but that's a fairly narrowly-focused remark.

Perhaps if you try to formulate some claim that's specific enough to be testable, you can find out about how similar ideas have fared when subjected to scientific method.

Can you describe a scientific experiment that can prove an idea innate, not learned from the environment?

Innate meaning, i think, born with: we are born with certain reflexes.
The question is are we born with certain abstract ideas rigth or wrong such as, but not necessarely that one, geometric shapes.
An experiment to prove an innate idea? That was my question: has it been attempted? Succesfuly?
One can imagine showing images to babies as soon as they can see and recording their reaction etc...

What are innate ideas?

Innate ideas are ideas or concepts that are believed to be present in the mind from birth, without being taught or learned.

Is there scientific evidence for innate ideas?

The concept of innate ideas has been debated among philosophers and scientists for centuries. While some argue that there is evidence for innate ideas, others believe that all knowledge is acquired through experience and learning.

What is the scientific perspective on innate ideas?

Many scientists believe that there is no scientific evidence to support the idea of innate ideas. They argue that all knowledge is acquired through sensory experience and learning, rather than being present from birth.

Are there any studies that support innate ideas?

There have been some studies that have attempted to provide evidence for innate ideas, particularly in the fields of psychology and linguistics. However, these studies have been heavily debated and have not been able to conclusively prove the existence of innate ideas.

What are some alternatives to the concept of innate ideas?

Some alternative theories to innate ideas include empiricism, which states that all knowledge comes from sensory experience, and constructivism, which suggests that knowledge is constructed through the interaction of experiences and prior knowledge.
