SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the comparative merits of "Algebra" by Michael Artin and "Abstract Algebra" by David S. Dummit and Richard M. Foote for learning abstract algebra. Participants express differing opinions, with some asserting that Artin's book is more engaging and aesthetically pleasing, while others argue that Dummit and Foote's text offers more comprehensive material. A consensus emerges that Artin provides a solid overview of algebra, but readers may need supplementary resources to cover specific gaps in knowledge.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with abstract algebra concepts
  • Understanding of group theory
  • Basic mathematical proof techniques
  • Knowledge of algebraic structures
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore supplementary texts to fill knowledge gaps after studying Artin's book
  • Investigate advanced topics in group theory using "Introduction to Group Theory" by W. Ledermann
  • Study specific algebraic structures such as rings and fields
  • Review problem sets from both Artin and Dummit and Foote for practical application
USEFUL FOR

Students and educators in mathematics, particularly those focusing on abstract algebra, as well as anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of algebraic concepts through comparative study of key texts.

Artin Vs Dummit ?!

hi every one ,
I read some comments to some students , some of them see that learning abstract algebra from artin book is more easier than dummit one and more interesting ! and some say that dummit's book is better than artin's one ,

so what is your opinion about what book is better ? and why ?

for me , I study the subject from dummit and foote , and I also study from : introduction to group theory by w.ledermann

I find dummit is quite good .

so I hope that all of you share me and the other members your opinons and why ?!

bye :)

I find Artin vastly superior to Dummit and Foote. Sure, Dummit and Foote has more material. But Artin's book has more beauty and cool nonstandard topics. After you read Artin, you might want to read another book to fill in your gaps, but you will also have a very good overview and feel of algebra.

It doesn't always say something, but Artin is also one of the most famous mathematicians there are.
