SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a student's desire to self-study Astronomy and Astrophysics during summer vacations before starting a college course that lacks these subjects. The student seeks guidance on effective materials, including video lectures, and a structured learning path to become an Astrophysicist. Key recommendations include focusing on foundational physics and mathematics, utilizing online resources like MIT OpenCourseWare, and engaging with community forums for support.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of physics principles
  • Mathematics proficiency, particularly calculus and algebra
  • Familiarity with online learning platforms
  • Access to resources like textbooks and video lectures
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore MIT OpenCourseWare for introductory Astronomy courses
  • Study "An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics" by Andrew Fraknoi
  • Watch YouTube lectures from reputable astrophysics educators
  • Join online forums such as the American Astronomical Society for networking and resources
USEFUL FOR

Students interested in pursuing a career in Astrophysics, self-learners seeking structured study paths, and individuals looking to enhance their understanding of astronomical concepts.

Hi,

I am currently enjoying my vacations and joining my UG course late this July. The institute I am joining doesn't offer any Astronomy and Astrophysics course but I am pretty much interested in it.

So, I want some guidance and materials on how to start Astronomy and Astrophysics self study as I want to take advantage of my summer vacations and then some guidance on pursuing it on my own in the college. Any video lectures etc. would be of great use. Kindly, show me the path too on how to become an Astrophysicist: I mean what are things and the order in which they should be learnt?

Thank You. :)

I would request the experts out there to just show the slightest way, that would be much grateful. Or mods please transfer this thread to some location where this might be suitable (maybe in astrophysics section?).
