Average Age on PF: What's the Answer?

  • Thread starter Thread starter Char. Limit
  • Start date Start date
AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around a poll aimed at determining the average age of users on Physics Forums (PF). Participants share their ages and engage in light-hearted banter about aging, with some humorously claiming to be "older than dirt." The conversation touches on the demographics of the forum, noting a bimodal age distribution, with younger users seeking help and older users participating due to their experience. The lack of participation from those aged 35-44 is attributed to career and family commitments, suggesting that this age group may have less time for online engagement. Participants express curiosity about statistical analysis of the poll results, discussing mean and median ages, and consider the implications of their findings. The thread also features playful interactions and jokes, reflecting a friendly community atmosphere.

How old are you?

That was most of my partial theory. On average, people start marrying off in the late 20s. My guess is that among scientists, this age may even be a little higher still. Also, if you're in Academia in the 35-44 age range, there's a reasonable chance you've not yet made tenure, so you've not got time to waste on frivolities like PF, and if you do, you probably stay out of GD.

However, children and spouses can be more demanding than the work. I find it easy to PF while working but can't imagine when working and having other nuisances  It's not work but after work that keeps 35-44 people out of here IMO.

Someone just came to my mind who hasn't been here for some time now, I would likely nominate him if ever been given the opportunity

Yeah, Danger is a good guy.

Oh man, I have a huge curiosity fixation... I know it's killed cats, but I have reliable information satisfaction brings them back after.

Who is this absent mystery 18-2*inger?

Ehh 18.5, so I feel like I should be in the youngest bracket. Voted correctly though

  • #60
So what's a good pdf for the bimodal distribution we have here anyway?

(I just arrived home)

Cyru aka relationship guru, he disappeared before you came here

He was behind new relationships forum. [https://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?p=1924466"].

If I recall correctly, he was also pushing for higher standards in other forums.

Hahhaha! Love that cat fight.

Do you think he quit posting because of that?

Don't worry, you're not a cat. I'm not a cat either so I also don't have to worry. :-p

Unfortunately, unlike Nismar and FTL, I am a cat. So I'd better keep my curiosity held in check.

Maybe we can invent a machine to turn you into something else, then you'd have no problem.

Wait a minute, you're a cat who can talk (type)!?

Typing is easy. Learning english was the hard part.

Ah, something like the movie Cats & Dogs.

What about the other animals?

I made a crude graph of the bimodal distribution we have here. I checked, and the integral over R of this function IS 1, so it's a proper pdf. And I think it's pretty interesting.

...Yeah, well, there are some people who spend an awful lot of time talking about the interpretation of quantum mechanics. My attitude — I would paraphrase Gœring—is that when I hear of Schrödinger's cat, I reach for my gun.

It's hard to pass up Schrodinger references, though...

And now you know the other reason he's my avatar. So I can make lame jokes like that one.

I'd add, Dr. Hawking is mistaken in his reference...

I forget said:
The famous line "when I hear the word culture, I reach for my gun", often associated with Nazi leaders, derives from this play. The actual original line from the play is slightly different: "Wenn ich Kultur höre ... entsichere ich meinen Browning!" "Whenever I hear of culture... I release the safety catch of my Browning!" (Act 1, Scene 1).

I should add, the play was for Hitler's... something, maybe a birthday, so it's Nazi-related.

So, I'm wondering when somebody will unleash some statistical fury on this sample? Mean, median, modus, standard deviation, kurtosis, variance, third moments,...

Come on, I know there are some of you who, deep down inside, want nothing more than to calculate...

  • #89
I have resisted the urge to input this all into MATLAB...

I took the gaussian of the first four categories, then the gaussian of the last five categories, divided both by 2 and then added them together! Sure, it's hardly rigorous, but I haven't taken even the most basic of statistics courses.
