Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the average transfer GPA for students moving from junior colleges to universities, specifically in the context of physics majors. Participants share personal experiences and inquire about GPA expectations at various institutions, including UCs and CSULB.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Homework-related
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the average transfer GPA for physics majors, noting a lack of information due to few students transferring into physics.
  • Another participant shares their experience of transferring from a junior college, seeking clarification on the original question.
  • Concerns are raised about junior colleges potentially lowering GPA standards, with some participants suggesting that universities may disregard junior college GPAs or require retaking courses.
  • A participant mentions attending a reputable junior college and expresses satisfaction with their GPA, while also inquiring about the average GPA for physics majors at UCs.
  • Another participant states their GPA as 3.8 while transferring to CSULB for physics, indicating a possible switch to electrical engineering.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the impact of transferring from junior colleges, with some asserting that GPA may be reset while others emphasize the importance of attending reputable institutions. The average GPA for physics majors at UCs remains unclear, with no consensus reached.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding the specific average GPAs for physics majors at various universities, as well as the criteria used by different institutions for evaluating transfer GPAs.

What is the average transfer gpa for physics major? I don't even know since hardly anyone even goes into physics for CC transfer. Example for UCs and other state universities.

I transferred to a university from a junior college. Is that what you're asking?

if you transfer from junior colleges, most universities will wipe your gpa clean or even make you retake many classes.

junior colleges are notorious for watering down of material and easy grades.

That's why you attend a reputable one. All of my courses transferred, but of course my GPA started over at the university.

Wasnt getting the answer I expected but oh well. I am in a reputable JC, one of the top 5 transfer JC in fact in CA so I am fine. Yea, transfer gpa from a JC to a UC. But then what is the average gpa for physics in the UC anyways.

Well, mine was like 3.8.

I am transferring to CSULB with a 3.8 (for physics, but am considering switching to EE)

EDIT: Also, I am transferring from OCC
