Photon Double Slit Experiment: Visualizing the Guiding Field

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the visualization of the guiding field in the double slit experiment, specifically comparing electron trajectories to those of photons. It is established that while the provided image depicts electron trajectories, similar visualizations for photons exist and have been derived through weak measurements. The De Broglie–Bohm theory provides a theoretical framework for understanding these phenomena, with specific references to experimental results documented in the linked study.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the double slit experiment
  • Familiarity with De Broglie–Bohm theory
  • Knowledge of weak measurement techniques
  • Basic concepts of quantum mechanics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the De Broglie–Bohm theory in detail
  • Explore weak measurement techniques and their applications
  • Examine experimental results related to photon trajectories in quantum mechanics
  • Study the implications of guiding fields in quantum physics
USEFUL FOR

Physicists, quantum mechanics researchers, and students interested in the foundational concepts of quantum theory and experimental physics.

Does the following picture which I think shows the guiding field for electron in the double slit experiment have a corresponding image when the experiment is done with photons?

Thanks for any help.

Those look like electron trajectories, not the guiding field. Trajectories for photons have been worked out for certain situations and produce similar pictures. See the references in the De Broglie–Bohm theory wiki page.

We do have experts here who hopefully can provide a more substantial response.

The picture above is for electrons, and for photons it's similar. In fact, for photons it has been measured by weak measurements: http://www.kiroku.riec.tohoku.ac.jp/simon/quantum/science-2-slit.pdf
The result is presented in Fig. 3.
