Build a Vortex Air Ring Shooter with 32 Gallon Bin

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on constructing a vortex air ring shooter using a 32-gallon bin. Key considerations include the effectiveness of different materials, such as plastic trash bags versus bungee cords, and the optimal size of the hole in the bin for maximizing the distance the vortex ring travels. Participants emphasize the importance of material characteristics and suggest testing various configurations to determine the best setup for achieving maximum range.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of vortex dynamics and air flow principles
  • Familiarity with materials science, specifically the properties of plastic and elastic materials
  • Basic knowledge of experimental design for testing hypotheses
  • Experience with constructing simple pneumatic devices
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the physics of vortex rings and their formation
  • Investigate the impact of hole diameter on vortex ring performance
  • Explore alternative materials for creating air seals, such as silicone or rubber
  • Learn about experimental methods for measuring projectile distance and accuracy
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for hobbyists, educators in physics, and makers interested in pneumatic devices and experimental design. It provides insights for anyone looking to optimize the performance of air-based propulsion systems.

Physics: Vortex air ring shooter?
Using air only & a PUSH or a PULL with a 32 GALLON bin how do i make a vortex ring that
travels Furthest?

- Whats better than a regular plastic trash Bag?

- Use a bungee cord?

- How big does the hole in the 32 Gallon Bin have to be in order to shoot reach furthest?

Here are some videos, but it doesn't seem to go that far:

PLEASE HELP!

Why don't you consider the characteristics of the trash bag - why is it good and how could it be improved?

Perhaps you can use this approach with each item and test your conclusions?
