SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on the construction of a homemade cyclotron, specifically addressing the configuration of magnetic "D's" and the detection of accelerated protons. Participants emphasize the importance of understanding the physics behind cyclotron operation, particularly when considering the use of multiple magnets versus a solid magnet for the D's. Additionally, there is a request for resources, including a materials list, to aid in the construction process. Safety risks and cost considerations are also highlighted as critical factors in the project.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of cyclotron physics and operation principles
  • Knowledge of magnetic field configurations and their effects
  • Familiarity with particle detection methods for high-speed protons
  • Basic skills in sourcing materials for scientific projects
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the design and functionality of magnetic D's in cyclotrons
  • Learn about proton detection techniques suitable for high-energy physics
  • Explore safety protocols for building and operating particle accelerators
  • Find comprehensive guides or forums that provide materials lists for cyclotron construction
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for amateur physicists, hobbyists interested in particle acceleration, and anyone looking to construct a homemade cyclotron while ensuring safety and effectiveness in their design.

Hey so i wanted to build a cyclotron but i have a few questions about them first...

First is do the magnetic "D's" have to be one solid magnet or can they be multiple magnets uniformly spaced out.

Also what can i use as a detector if say i want to accelerate a proton to like 75% the speed of light?

Lastly does anyone have a link that would give me more info on how to build one ( i understand the theory behind it but I am looking for something like a materials list of sorts.)

thanks

It's important to understand the cost of what you are thinking about doing, and also to get an appreciation of the safety risks. Here is a previous PF thread about the subject, with links out to other related PF threads:

ya I am just looking to build the best one i can with 100$ lol

That statement alone tells me that you do not understand the physics enough to even BEGIN that project. But, keep learning!

Fine. PM me if you want the thread re-opened.
