SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on constructing a bridge using Balsa Wood, specifically evaluating the Howe and Pratt Truss designs. Key requirements include a maximum mass of 25 grams, a test load capacity of 15 kg, and specific dimensions for roadway openings. Participants suggest utilizing design tools such as AutoCAD for optimal construction planning and visualization.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of truss bridge designs, specifically Howe and Pratt Trusses
  • Familiarity with Balsa Wood properties and construction techniques
  • Basic knowledge of structural load calculations
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for design and drafting
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the structural advantages of Howe vs. Pratt Truss designs
  • Learn about Balsa Wood's mechanical properties and weight limitations
  • Study load testing methods for small-scale bridge models
  • Explore advanced features in AutoCAD for bridge design and simulation
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for engineering students, hobbyists in model building, and anyone involved in structural design or bridge construction projects.

I need to make a bridge using Balsa Wood, but I can't decide whether to use the Howe or Pratt Truss.

Requirements
maximum mass of 25 grams
maximum test load will be 15kg
must allow a 5.0 (∼2”) cm cube to pass along the roadway without touching
the structure
must be an opening at the center of the roadway of at least 1 cm x 1 cm. This will
allow the loading block bolt to pass through the roadway.

Any thoughts?
