SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on building a structured self-study course in mathematics, covering linear algebra, optimization, statistics, and probability. The recommended tools include Obsidian, a note-taking application that supports markdown and LaTeX, enabling users to create interconnected notes. Additionally, resources such as Khan Academy and Math Is Power 4 U are highlighted for their extensive video libraries, which cater to various educational levels from middle school to college calculus. The community also points to a dedicated thread for free math books as a valuable resource.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with linear algebra concepts
  • Understanding of optimization techniques, specifically RBFs (Radial Basis Functions)
  • Basic knowledge of statistics and probability theory
  • Experience with markdown and LaTeX for note-taking
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore the features of Obsidian for organizing mathematical notes
  • Review the comprehensive video content on Khan Academy
  • Investigate the Math Is Power 4 U resource for structured learning
  • Access the dedicated thread for free math books to find suitable texts
USEFUL FOR

Students and self-learners in mathematics, educators seeking structured course materials, and anyone interested in optimizing their study methods in linear algebra, optimization, statistics, and probability.

Hi,

I mostly do Self study and I was wondering how to build up a course ie the.different levels from beginner to advanced in the fields of linear algebra, optimization (rbfs etc), statistics and probability? Suggestions of books with the various levels is welcome. Please help me out in this as I am all over the place

Well one thing you could check out is Obsidian. Its a kind of note taking application that uses markdown+latex for entering notes. Notes can reference other notes to basically create a personal wikipedia of your notes.

I've been playing with it for a awhile now and like what it can do. You could use it to organize and interconnect your notes and thoughts on math.

We have a thread dedicated to math books:

https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/free-math-books.796225/

and there are good short videos on math at www.khanacademy.com and at www.mathispower4u.com

I particularly like Math Is Power 4 U since its a comprehensive set of 5000 videos covering middle school to first year college Calculus 1,2,3 Linear Algebra, Differential Equations and Statistics. Everything a budding scientist needs for undergraduate studies at college.

TL;DR: How can I begin to gain an understanding of astronomy? Hello there, and thank you in advance to anyone that might answer this. I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post a question like this, as I am new to this website and also very nervous about making a post that others might see/reply to. I am a freshman in high school and I am interested in astronomy. I want to learn about space, but I am not quite sure where to begin. Is there anything that I can do to seriously expand my...
