Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the simulation of a bushing joint in Ansys W14, specifically focusing on the ability to model heat conduction between two parts connected by this joint. The scope includes technical aspects of simulation setup and contact conditions in a coupled physics analysis.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the feasibility of simulating a bushing joint that also conducts heat.
  • Another participant suggests that a coupled physics analysis can be set up, indicating that structural analysis can utilize a cylindrical support condition while the thermal analysis can employ a thermal contact condition for heat conduction.
  • A later reply mentions a solution involving a command to modify the contact settings, specifically to allow only temperature degrees of freedom (DOF) for the contact.
  • Another participant confirms that using a bonded contact with only temperature DOF alongside the bushing joint successfully achieved the desired simulation outcome.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants appear to agree on the methods for simulating the bushing joint with heat conduction, but the discussion does not explore any competing views or unresolved issues.

Contextual Notes

Limitations: The discussion does not address potential assumptions regarding the material properties or specific configurations of the bushing joint that may affect the simulation results.

Is it possible to simulate a bushing joint between to parts
that would also conduct heat from one part to another?

Engineering news on Phys.org
It's possible to set up a coupled physics analysis in which the structural analysis has a cylindrical support condition, and the thermal portion has a thermal contact condition which conducts heat.

Different physics regimes do not have to have the same number or type of contact conditions for a coupled physics analysis.

Thank you. I solved this by adding command to the contact

keyopt, cid,1, 2

so that the contact only has temperature DOF.

so bonded contact with only temp dof and bushing joint did the job.
