SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the launch velocity of a projectile from a hanging counterweight trebuchet. Key equations for this calculation include the principles of energy conservation and projectile motion. Participants emphasize the importance of providing a sketch of the trebuchet with dimensions and weights to facilitate accurate calculations. The conversation highlights the need for a structured approach to physics projects, particularly in deriving the final launch velocity.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of energy conservation principles in physics
  • Familiarity with projectile motion equations
  • Basic knowledge of trebuchet mechanics
  • Ability to create and interpret technical sketches
NEXT STEPS
  • Research energy conservation in mechanical systems
  • Learn about the equations of motion for projectiles
  • Explore the mechanics of trebuchet design and function
  • Study how to create accurate technical sketches for engineering projects
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for physics students, engineering students, and hobbyists interested in mechanical design and projectile motion calculations.

Hello, I'm designing a hanging counterweight trebuchet for my physics project. I'm wondering if there is any way I can calculate the velocity of the projectile when it is released? (It's shot using a sling attached to the arm)

Thanks

Welcome to the PF.

I've moved your thread to the schoolwork forums. You need to show us some effort in your school project. What are the Relevant Equations for this type of calculation? How would you go about setting up the equations that will result in the final launch velocity of the object? Also, can you show us a sketch of your device, with dimensions and weights?
