Calculating the Potential Well of Neutron Capture by the Strong Force

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the potential well of a nucleus for neutron capture, emphasizing the role of the strong force. Participants note that this potential well resembles an indirect strong force, akin to van der Waals forces, but specific to nuclear interactions. The consensus is that deriving this potential well from first principles is complex, and experimental data is often utilized for accurate calculations. References to experimental methods and theoretical frameworks are sought for further understanding.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of nuclear physics principles
  • Familiarity with the strong nuclear force
  • Knowledge of potential well concepts in quantum mechanics
  • Experience with experimental data analysis in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the strong force and its implications in neutron capture
  • Study potential well models in quantum mechanics

If I have a low energy neutron and I bring it close to a nucleus it will be captured when it gets close enough.

How can I calculate the shape of the potential well of the nucleus for neutron capture?

I keep reading that it is due to the strong force, which I agree with. But it is some kind of indirect strong force kind of like a van der waals force but for the strong force. Any references would be appreciated. Thank you.

It's difficult to calculate from first principles. Usually one takes it from experiment.
