Calculus III & differential equations in one semester?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the feasibility of taking Calculus III and Differential Equations in the same semester, particularly in the context of a community college schedule. Participants share their experiences and seek advice on managing the workload alongside other courses.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about whether to take both courses simultaneously and seeks advice based on their current schedule.
  • Another participant suggests replacing Differential Equations with Linear Algebra if it hasn't been taken yet, recommending to take Differential Equations in a subsequent semester.
  • Several participants assert that taking both courses together is manageable, particularly in a community college setting.
  • One participant shares their personal experience of successfully managing both courses along with an additional engineering course, describing it as a surprisingly light semester.
  • Another participant agrees, stating that Differential Equations and Calculus III are easily manageable together, especially at community college.
  • A participant currently enrolled in similar courses also finds the workload to be easily manageable.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that taking Calculus III and Differential Equations together is feasible, particularly in a community college environment. However, there is a suggestion that Linear Algebra might be a preferable option if not yet completed, indicating some differing views on course selection.

Contextual Notes

Some participants' claims are based on personal experiences, which may not universally apply. The discussion does not address specific challenges or prerequisites that could affect individual experiences.

Who May Find This Useful

should i or should i not? any advice? here's my current fall08 schedule:
calculusIII
differential equations
mechanics of solids and fluids
general ed course

both calcIII and de are in the evening (back-to-back, 2 hours each). for those who have taken both of these classes, is it possible? or am i setting myself up to drop on of those during the semester? i hear that de isn't too bad of a course. if i take them separately, ill have to add another semester to my plan, making it 4 years in community college...ouch. any advice/insights would be appreciated.

If you haven't taken linear algebra yet i would replace d.e. with that and then take d.e. next semester

at community college? easily doable.

I took DE/Cal III/EP II in my last semester at CC before transferring and it was a surprisingly light semester.

Agreed. DiffEq and Calc III are easily manageable together...especially at CC.

I am taking similar courses this quarter - two math, one engineering, one GE. Easily doable.
