Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of creating an artificial selectively permeable membrane, particularly in the context of a science fair project. Participants explore various aspects of selective permeability, including potential applications and specific requirements for the membrane's functionality.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the specific criteria for selectivity, asking "selectively permeable for what?" and mentions existing technologies like dialysis filters and mechanical filters that exhibit selective permeability.
  • Another participant expresses skepticism about the possibility of creating a filter that is selectively permeable only to sodium ions (Na+).
  • A different participant specifies the need for the membrane to facilitate osmosis and be selectively permeable to either positive or negative molecules.
  • A link to a Wikipedia page on semi-permeable membranes is provided, suggesting that there are various material options available for creating such membranes.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the feasibility of creating a membrane that meets specific selectivity criteria. There are differing views on what constitutes selective permeability and the practical challenges involved.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not clarify the specific conditions or definitions of selectivity they are using, which may affect the discussion. The conversation also lacks detailed exploration of the materials or methods that could be employed to create the proposed membrane.

Is it possible to create an artifical selectively permeable membrane? I need one for a science fair project idea I had.

Selectively permeable *for what*?

Dialysis filters are selectively permeable. Any mechanical filter is selectively permeable. Put some charge on the filter and it's also selective for charged solutes.

Can we make a filter that is permeable only to Na+, for example? I don't think so.

Selectively permeable for either positve or negative molecules. I need the membrane to cause osmosis.
