Empowerment plays a crucial role in improving patient outcomes in cancer treatment. The discussion highlights the significance of a positive outlook and the placebo effect, emphasizing that effective doctors treat patients as individuals rather than merely addressing diseases. Does psychology have the same potential as a healing art as physiology has?

placebo effect is real

Positive outlook is pretty well-regarded as a factor in cancer treatments, too. Decent doctors know that they are not treating "a disease" or "a condition", but a real patient, and they make an effort to involve the patient in their own treatment. Empowerment (as opposed to helpless passivity) may not save a patient's life, but it can make the remainder of their life more comfortable and enjoyable.
