Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of obtaining +5V and -5V power supplies from a 9V battery using a TL084 operational amplifier. Participants explore various methods and considerations related to this power supply configuration.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the method to derive +/-5V from a 9V battery using a TL084.
  • Another participant suggests using two 9V batteries as a potential solution.
  • A different viewpoint mentions that it is possible to achieve +4.5V and -4.5V, questioning if that would suffice for the application.
  • Another method proposed involves using the TL084 to create a square wave oscillator, followed by a high pass RC network to generate both positive and negative outputs, with a note on the need for voltage regulation and limited current capability.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple competing views on how to achieve the desired voltage levels, and the discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approach.

Contextual Notes

Some methods mentioned may depend on specific circuit configurations and assumptions about load requirements, which are not fully detailed in the discussion.

Using TL084 and want to supply +/-5v for power. I heard there is a way to do it with 9v battery but I can't find any info. anybody have an idea on how its done?
thanks

Can you just use two 9V batteries?

If not, use an inverting DC-DC converter to give you the negative rail.

You can easily get +4.5 V and -4.5V. Is that good enough?

One method would be to use the TL084 to make a square wave oscillator. Then at the output use a high pass RC network to feed both a positive and a negative rectifier. You may need to regulate the voltage to +5 V and -5 V. Your current capability will be very limited.
