SUMMARY

Character recognition in images, known as Optical Character Recognition (OCR), is widely implemented in various software applications. Programs such as Adobe Acrobat are commonly used for this purpose, allowing users to extract text from image files effectively. The technology is extensively utilized by industries, notably the postal service, for processing written text in images. Numerous OCR solutions are available, catering to different needs and functionalities.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology
  • Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat for text extraction
  • Basic knowledge of image file formats (e.g., JPEG, PNG)
  • Awareness of programming concepts for custom OCR solutions
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore advanced features of Adobe Acrobat for OCR tasks
  • Research open-source OCR libraries like Tesseract
  • Learn about image preprocessing techniques to enhance OCR accuracy
  • Investigate machine learning approaches for custom character recognition

Hi guys,

I was just wondering if any of you knew if there have been any programs that have been written by people to perform character recognition in an image file. That is, you have an image of written text and you want to somehow recognise and extract characters. So for example, if you had an image of the letter 'S' is there the possibility that a program can be written to identify this character and then put it into a character array.

Cheers

Yeah, there are, you know, hundreds of them. They're used all over the place. Probably the biggest consumer of such technology is the postal service.

I use Adobe Acrobat.

Thanks for that! After much more searching I have found a couple of programs that I think do what I want them to do so I will check them out.
