Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the potential of RNA interference (RNAi) in combating cancer genes. Participants explore the mechanisms of RNAi, its current status in therapeutic applications, and related concepts such as telomerase mutations and their implications for cancer growth.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the specific mechanisms by which RNAi can combat cancer genes.
  • Another participant references a wiki article as a resource for understanding RNAi.
  • Some participants note that, as far as they know, there are currently no approved RNAi therapies for any diseases, including cancer.
  • One participant mentions a Ted-ed video that suggests RNAi could be used for cancer treatment, although this is not yet established in practice.
  • A participant introduces the topic of telomerase mutations, discussing their role in tumor growth and the paradox of telomerase activity in aging.
  • Another participant reiterates the potential of RNAi therapies against cancer, emphasizing that while development is ongoing, no therapies have been proven safe and effective in clinical trials to date.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of curiosity and skepticism regarding the application of RNAi in cancer treatment. There is no consensus on the effectiveness or current status of RNAi therapies, with some asserting that no approved therapies exist while others point to ongoing research and potential future applications.

Contextual Notes

Participants acknowledge the lack of approved RNAi therapies and the ongoing nature of clinical trials, indicating that the discussion is limited by the current state of research and regulatory approval processes.

How exactly does RNAi help in fighting against cancer gene ?

AFAIK, there are no approved therapies that use RNAi against any disease, including cancer.

People are certainly trying to develop such therapies and they can, in principle, be used against cancer, but to date no one has shown such therapies to be safe and effective in clinical trials. There are some promising therapies in clinical trials that may turn out to be safe and effective, but no such therapies have been approved by the FDA yet.
