SUMMARY

The discussion clarifies that electron pairing in atoms is not due to spin allowing like charges to stay together, but rather the result of energy states. The attraction of electrons to the nucleus is stronger than the repulsion between electrons. Specifically, a configuration with one spin-up and one spin-down electron in the same orbital has lower energy than configurations where both electrons have the same spin. This energy difference drives the pairing of electrons in atomic structures.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of atomic structure and electron configuration
  • Knowledge of quantum mechanics, specifically electron spin
  • Familiarity with energy states in quantum systems
  • Basic principles of electrostatics and charge interactions
NEXT STEPS
  • Research quantum mechanics principles related to electron spin and pairing
  • Study atomic orbital theory and energy state configurations
  • Explore the concept of potential energy in atomic interactions
  • Investigate the role of electron-electron repulsion in atomic stability
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, chemists, and anyone interested in understanding atomic interactions and the principles of quantum mechanics.

I never understood this how do 2 like charges stay together, the electro is it like eddy currents or something

Spin doesn't allow electrons to stay together. I assume that you're talking about electrons in an atom. What happens is that the attraction of an electron to the nucleus is a bit stronger than the repulsion between the electrons. The bound state of the electrons and nucleus has a lower energy than the unbound state.

Pairing happens because the configuration with a spin up and spin down electron in a particular orbital state has lower energy than the configuration where one of the electrons is in that state and the other electron has the same spin and sits in the next higher energy state.
