Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the potential for developing tolerance to one dopamine reuptake inhibitor (DRI) affecting tolerance to others. Participants explore the implications of using bupropion for attention deficit disorder (ADD) and its relationship to other stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin, as well as concerns about the onset of effects and side effects such as seizures.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions whether developing tolerance to bupropion necessarily leads to tolerance to other DRIs like Adderall and Ritalin.
  • Another participant mentions their experience with bupropion, stating they have not developed tolerance to it.
  • A participant expresses curiosity about the immediate effects of bupropion compared to Ritalin and Adderall, seeking information on its efficacy for attention span improvement.
  • Concerns are raised about the potential for seizures resulting from overdosing on bupropion and whether a single overdose would lead to multiple seizures.
  • Some participants reference research and Wikipedia articles but find them lacking in addressing specific questions about the comparative effects and timing of DRIs.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on whether tolerance to one DRI affects tolerance to others, and there are varying personal experiences regarding the effects and side effects of bupropion.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the immediate effects of bupropion compared to other stimulants and the relationship between different DRIs. There is also a lack of clarity regarding the risk of seizures associated with overdosing on bupropion.

Does getting addicted/tolerant to one of them make you necessarily addicted/tolerant to others?

I'm on bupropion to treat my ADD (primarily inattentive) symptoms, which is one. But so are cocaine, Adderall, and Ritalin. So if I get tolerant to bupropion, will that make me necessarily tolerant to Adderall and Ritalin? And then screw me over unless I get a modafinil prescription?

And what of other drugs that increase dopamine, but by other methods?

Yeah, but I'll only see him in another couple of weeks.

Oh, you take bupropion? For what? And by the way, do you feel the effects almost immediately? Does it make your attention span really improve? And what dose do you take? And have you gotten any seizures?

Oh, and I already read the Wiki articles - nonetheless, they do not answer my questions nor do they address the issue of how it compares with other DRI.

I've also looked at research journals comparing bupropion with the amphetamines, but it's only in terms of scores - it still doesn't explain when the effects come, are they acute or not, etc... And not for schoolwork either - which is what I'm primarily concerned about.

I know that people who take Ritalin and Adderall feel the effects immediately, so I'm wondering if bupropion is like that.

But as for seizures - if you overdose and get a seizure, then will that be the only seizure you get from the overdose?
