Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the comparison between CERN and Fermilab as facilities for theoretical physicists, focusing on various criteria such as job stability, access to new research, freedom of work, colleague quality, technology, and pay.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions which facility is better for theoretical physicists based on several criteria.
  • Another participant suggests that the decision is premature and emphasizes the importance of completing education and gaining experience before making such comparisons.
  • A later reply reiterates the difficulty of securing a permanent position after just one postdoc, particularly at CERN and Fermilab, and notes that many factors influencing the decision are beyond the individual's control.
  • Some participants express that there are more options available beyond just CERN and Fermilab.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the decision between CERN and Fermilab is complex and influenced by many factors, but there is no consensus on which facility is definitively better.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights the uncertainty surrounding job security and the competitive nature of securing positions in theoretical physics, particularly at major research facilities.

As a theoretical physicist, what is a better facility to work at? (based on the following criteria)

Job stability
Access to new research
Freedom of work (Any field)
Better colleagues
Better Tech/Equipment
Better pay (not that important)

This is like deciding whether you want to pitch for the Red Sox or the Yankees while still it little league.

Finish high school, then college, then graduate school, then one or two postdocs, and then we will talk.

Should I really have two?
also I was wondering if anyone worked there and had reviews but I see what you mean
thanks!

It is very hard to get a permanent position after one postdoc, especially in theoretical physics, especially at CERN and Fermilab.

Anyway, that decision will depend on so many factors, most of them are out of your influence. Don't worry about that now. Also, there is much more than just CERN and Fermilab.

I understand, thanks anyways
