Change in computer paper consumption

AI Thread Summary
The discussion highlights that the advent of computers has led to an overall increase in paper consumption over the past two decades. Despite the rise of digital communication, the ease and low cost of generating printed materials have resulted in more paper being used for transactions, such as monthly reminders from service providers. The shift from hand-typed letters to automated printing has diminished the incentive to minimize paper use, leading to an increase in printed communications, including junk mail. The conversation also touches on the availability of paperless billing options, although many companies still opt to send physical reminders alongside digital notifications.

Have computers increased or decreased the consumption of paper to date?

Huge increase - can't find the figures, but paper production has been going steadily up for the last 20years.

If I must use computer paper, I use both sides where possible.

It's more than just having printers at home - there has been a huge rise in the amount of paper generated for each transaction.
When letters and invoices had to be hand typed they cost money so you minimised the amount you sent. Now it's cheaper to generate the letter than decide if it's needed - that's why my cell phone company sends me a letter each month to remind me that my online bill is ready.

LMAO. Don't just email you a response or something? Can't you just opt for a paperless bill, I know most banks and cell phones carriers do that here in the States.

Yes I have an online bill - they send me a mailing to tell me my online bill is ready!
They also include a load of junk flyerswith ti.

In my discussions elsewhere, I've noticed a lot of disagreement regarding AI. A question that comes up is, "Is AI hype?" Unfortunately, when this question is asked, the one asking, as far as I can tell, may mean one of three things which can lead to lots of confusion. I'll list them out now for clarity. 1. Can AI do everything a human can do and how close are we to that? 2. Are corporations and governments using the promise of AI to gain more power for themselves? 3. Are AI and transhumans...
Thread 'ChatGPT Examples, Good and Bad'
I've been experimenting with ChatGPT. Some results are good, some very very bad. I think examples can help expose the properties of this AI. Maybe you can post some of your favorite examples and tell us what they reveal about the properties of this AI. (I had problems with copy/paste of text and formatting, so I'm posting my examples as screen shots. That is a promising start. But then I provided values V=1, R1=1, R2=2, R3=3 and asked for the value of I. At first, it said...
