Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the impact of computers on paper consumption, exploring whether the use of computers has led to an increase or decrease in paper usage. Participants examine various factors contributing to paper consumption in the context of transactions, billing, and printing practices.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that there has been a huge increase in paper consumption, citing a steady rise in paper production over the last 20 years.
  • One participant mentions their practice of using both sides of computer paper to minimize waste.
  • Another participant argues that the cost of generating letters and invoices has decreased, leading to an increase in the amount of paper generated for each transaction, as companies send more communications than before.
  • A later reply questions the necessity of physical mail for notifications, suggesting that opting for paperless billing could reduce paper consumption.
  • One participant notes that even with online billing, they still receive physical mail notifications, which often include additional promotional materials.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the overall impact of computers on paper consumption, with some asserting an increase and others questioning the necessity of physical mail. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the net effect of computers on paper usage.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference personal experiences and observations, but specific figures or studies to support claims about paper production trends are not provided. The discussion lacks consensus on the definitions of "paper consumption" and the factors influencing it.

Have computers increased or decreased the consumption of paper to date?

Huge increase - can't find the figures, but paper production has been going steadily up for the last 20years.

If I must use computer paper, I use both sides where possible.

It's more than just having printers at home - there has been a huge rise in the amount of paper generated for each transaction.
When letters and invoices had to be hand typed they cost money so you minimised the amount you sent. Now it's cheaper to generate the letter than decide if it's needed - that's why my cell phone company sends me a letter each month to remind me that my online bill is ready.

LMAO. Don't just email you a response or something? Can't you just opt for a paperless bill, I know most banks and cell phones carriers do that here in the States.

Yes I have an online bill - they send me a mailing to tell me my online bill is ready!
They also include a load of junk flyerswith ti.
