Chemistry Equilibrium: Picking B & Not Sure for C

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the chemical equilibrium of the reaction 2SO2 + O2 <--> 2SO3, specifically focusing on how various changes in the system (addition of SO2, removal of SO3, changes in vessel size, and injection of He) affect the position of equilibrium. The scope includes conceptual understanding of Le Chatelier's principle and its application to equilibrium shifts.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant indicates that injecting additional SO2 shifts the equilibrium to the right (B).
  • The same participant suggests that removing some SO3 also results in a shift to the right (B).
  • For the scenario of decreasing the size of the reaction vessel, the participant expresses uncertainty between options B or C, indicating a need for further clarification on how pressure changes affect equilibrium.
  • Another participant questions whether the pressure increase from decreasing vessel size affects the equilibrium position.
  • A different participant notes that changing the concentration of materials by either adding more or compressing them in a smaller volume will influence the equilibrium, implying a connection to Le Chatelier's principle.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the effects of adding SO2 and removing SO3, but there is uncertainty regarding the effects of decreasing the vessel size and injecting He, with no consensus reached on these points.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not fully resolved the implications of pressure changes on equilibrium, and there are assumptions regarding the behavior of gases under varying conditions that remain unaddressed.

consider the reaction
2SO2 + O2 <---> 2SO3

A SHIFTS TO THE LEFT
B SHIFTS TO THE RIGHT
C NO CHANGE

ADDITIONAL SO2 IS INJECTED INTO REACTION VESSEL
I PICKED B

SOME SO3 IS REMOVED FROM THE REATION VESSEL
I PICKED B AGAIN

THE SIZE OF THE REACTION VESSEL IS DECREASED
NOT SURE B OR C

SOME He IS INJECTED INTO REATION VESSEL
NOT SURE B OR C

The questions you have concern the 3rd and 4th question. Explain why you pick b or c for these questions.

i guess the question is does the pressure increase and does that efect the equlibrium

Putting more material in the same volume or the same amount of material in a smaller volume changes the concentration of the material... and you know how changing the concentration affects equilibrium.
