SUMMARY

The discussion centers on determining which activities in a critical path diagram can be delayed without affecting the minimum completion time. Specifically, tasks B and D can each be delayed for 28 minutes, while tasks E and G can only be delayed for 8 minutes. The consensus is that task D is the only activity that can be extended by 28 minutes without repercussions, as delaying task B impacts the timing of tasks E and G. Thus, the correct answer is task D.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of critical path method (CPM) in project management
  • Familiarity with task duration and start time calculations
  • Knowledge of dependency relationships between tasks
  • Ability to interpret critical path diagrams
NEXT STEPS
  • Research advanced critical path analysis techniques
  • Learn about project scheduling software tools like Microsoft Project
  • Explore the implications of task dependencies on project timelines
  • Study methods for optimizing project completion times
USEFUL FOR

Project managers, students studying project management, and professionals involved in scheduling and resource allocation will benefit from this discussion.

Homework Statement

I have a critical path diagram (see below):
Nl7AE7I.png

The duration of each task is listed, as is the earliest start time (the number in the left side of the box) and the latest start time (the number in the right side of the box). Note that there is a dummy between G and H, and G and J.

The question asks: Several activities can be delayed without increasing the minimum completion time. Which of these activities can be delayed for the longest time

The Attempt at a Solution

My logic is that both B and D can be delayed for 28 minutes each. Similarly, E and G can be delayed for 8 minutes each. Therefore I would say the answer is B and D.

However, the solutions state that the answer is D (no further information, or length of delay is provided).

Delaying B has other consequences.
What happens with tasks E and G when B is delayed?

Of course. An oversight on my behalf. So that means D can be extended by 28, while B, G and E can only be extended by 8.
