Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a comparison between two microcontrollers, PIC16F and Atmel ATmega, focusing on specific aspects such as architecture, microcontroller core, ALU capabilities, instruction set, and reliability of operation. The context is related to a homework question, prompting participants to explore these technical details.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses difficulty in finding resources that compare the two microcontrollers on specific points, indicating a need for detailed information.
  • Another participant suggests that the reliability question could be addressed by considering features like Watchdog Timer (WDT) and Brown-out Reset (BOR).
  • It is noted that both microcontrollers share similarities in architecture, specifically Harvard and RISC architecture.
  • Participants mention that the PIC instruction set consists of 35 instructions, while the Atmel instruction set has 131 instructions.
  • Some participants are uncertain about the differences in microcontroller core and ALU capabilities, indicating a gap in understanding or available information.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the architectural similarities and the differences in the instruction sets. However, there remains uncertainty regarding the microcontroller core and ALU capabilities, indicating that the discussion is not fully resolved.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference datasheets and databooks as potential sources for information, but there are limitations in their understanding of specific technical differences, particularly regarding the microcontroller core and ALU capabilities.

Hi
This a question from one of my exam papers.I searched all over internet but couldn't find any article or information source comparing atmel vs PIC in following manner.
all i could find was threads talking about which is better.none of them discussed the matter with respective to following points.
so can some one help me here?
thank you

Homework Statement

Compare two microcontrollers PIC16F and Atmel ATmega considering following facts

  1. Architecture
  2. Microcontroller core
  3. ALU capabilities
  4. Instruction set
  5. Reliability of operation

I'm not sure how to answer the reliability question, but the others can be answered by reading their datasheets/databooks.

ya i read them but couldn't figure out different of
1.microcontrolller core
2.ALU capabilities

What did you get for the rest of the answers?

well for architecture they are similar-harvard,RISC architecture
for instruction set PIC has 35 and atmel has 131
for reliability i was thinking about features like WDT and BOR
