The discussion revolves around feelings of jealousy and admiration towards individuals perceived as superior in intelligence or beauty. Participants express a mix of emotions, acknowledging jealousy as a potentially harmful sentiment but emphasizing the importance of drawing inspiration from those who excel. Many advocate for self-improvement rather than comparison, suggesting that one can learn from more talented individuals without feeling threatened. The conversation also touches on the idea that true confidence comes from self-acceptance and recognizing one's own value, while some express a desire to be around humble, skilled people who do not flaunt their superiority. Overall, the thread highlights the complexities of human emotions regarding superiority and the potential for personal growth through admiration rather than envy.

How do you feel about others' superiority?

  • I understimate his superiority in the way that people and myself think s/he's not special at all.

Same here. I try to learn from others, and emulate their best characteristics. When I meet or work with someone who is exceptionally bright and productive, I try to learn what they do that makes them so. I can't artificially increase my IQ, but I can morph my work habits to be more productive and more effective. When I meet someone on the motocross track who is faster and smoother than I am (happens a lot, I'm afraid), I watch and learn and get a little faster myself.

I didn't vote either -- you omitted the choice that nazzard and I would have made.

I told you that it could be "That would be nice to make friend with him/her. " .

No, not quite right. My instinct is not to befriend, necessarily, it is to improve myself in every way that I can. Imitation is a sincere form of flattery, but it is not necessarily linked to a desire for friendship.

Friendship develops over time. Yet admiration has never been a prerequisite for me to "start" the process. It can be anything really, but usually it starts with sharing/experiencing a nice moment together.

Jealousy can be "poisonous" and it's a safe bet that nothing good arises from it.

Anyone a victim of jealousy here?

No I haven't been a victim of jealousy. I think one doesn't have to actually do all mistakes or feel the consequences from others doing them to tell right from wrong.

You're right! I should have added that option to the list as well.:blushing: I always think people whom I learn from or admire/respect a lot are my friends anyway.

Here I meant the victim of jealousy is the 1 whom others are jealous of him/her and you know how some stupid people react when they just see someone's superior to them.(spoiling that person onstead of improving their own lives:rolleyes: ) Well as for me I think that's great to be wit people who're better than you. You learn a lot and feel better about world.

11 napolean complexes, wow I wonder if it's statistically accurate that people with a penchant for physics have an overinflated opinion of themselves. 11 Jesus's and 40 normal people. That's a worrying statistic:-p

Oh why fight it I'm just marvelous you all aren't fit to stand in my shadow :biggrin:

Thinking about it's just people in general that over egg their own pies, after all people who don't rarely get noticed.

I enjoy spending time with nice and funny people, if they're smarter or funnier it's even better...

i don't feel threatened by other's superiority, i think some poeple have great gifts, and they make our world a better place to be in.

people who know their own value (with no underestimation or exaggeration), and have normal or above social skills are humble, and are fun to be with, you'd notice they are smarter/prettier/funnier/richer, but they don't make a big deal of it because they don't need to make people see it.

i like being around such people, and i hope i fall in this category too (though I've been told by two people that i sometimes petronize.. I'm not sure if it's just the way they interprete what i say though, because i never think I am better then anyone, when i ask for examples they say i have a certain expression or tone... nothing that i actually say... so i don't know what to make of it, i took a mental note to be aware of this.).

Don't compare yourself to others, it will make you jealous and vain.

Do you just like it because you are doing that for others or you enjoy cooking itself?

I never cook just for me... if I'm alone, i'll just make something that's easy to make, like spaghetti and suasages...
It's only when others eat with me that i cook something nice... last time was two days ago - i made some nice chicken slices in wine, a pie, andd we ate a watermelon for dessert

I like sharing and making things for others... it's very rewarding.
