SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on a design contest for 3rd year college students that emphasizes the use of recycled materials. Participants are encouraged to create innovative projects, such as a mouse trap car, utilizing materials like cast concrete and 8'' schedule 80 PVC pipe. One participant is constructing a 12'x12' shop with a 9' roof, featuring an R-value of 70 and a fire rating of 1 hour, using concrete pieces and PVC pipes as structural supports. This initiative promotes sustainability and creativity in engineering design.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of sustainable design principles
  • Basic knowledge of structural engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with materials like concrete and PVC
  • Experience in project management for design contests
NEXT STEPS
  • Research sustainable building materials and their applications
  • Explore design techniques for using recycled materials in engineering
  • Learn about structural integrity and load-bearing calculations
  • Investigate project management strategies for design competitions
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for engineering students, design contest organizers, and educators focused on promoting sustainability in engineering practices.

Suggest some designs that can be a contest for 3rd year college students. The materials that will be used are recycled as much as possible. For example, a mouse trap car.

I'm building a shop out of cast concrete pieces and 8'' schedule 80 pvc pipe donated by the city after their recent water service expansions. I'm casting all the concrete pieces myself and the pipe will serve as support columns for the roof. and everything can be shipped on a flatbed tractor trailer. it 12'x12' with a 9' roof and an r-value of 70 with a fire rating of 1 hr since it is made mostly of concrete.
