Diodes, transistors and valves

Given that one has a basic understanding of the working mechanism behind the diode, how can one develop a comparison between diodes, transistors and the valve.

Part of the distinction is between function and form. Diodes perform a certain function. Transistors (solid state) and valves (vacuum tubes) are different forms.
