Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the role of Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) peptides in diseases and their application in peptide vaccines. Participants explore the connection between MHC and autoimmune diseases, the specifics of MHC class I antigen presentation, and the design of peptide vaccines, particularly for melanoma.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested
  • Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note that MHC peptides are crucial for distinguishing between self and non-self, with implications for autoimmune diseases.
  • One participant references the Sanger Institute as a resource for MHC-linked diseases.
  • Another participant expresses interest specifically in MHC class I and its role in antigen presentation.
  • Discussion includes the potential for designing peptide vaccines "in silico" for melanoma, emphasizing the need to identify unique surface proteins associated with the disease.
  • Participants share strategies for finding relevant research papers, including specific search terms and techniques for using databases like PubMed and Google.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the importance of MHC in immune response and the relevance of peptide vaccines, but there are varying perspectives on the specifics of MHC class I and the methodologies for vaccine design. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approaches to identifying antigens and designing effective vaccines.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the specificity of MHC class I discussions and the need for further exploration of antigenicity testing methods. The discussion does not resolve the complexities involved in vaccine design or the nuances of MHC-related diseases.

Who May Find This Useful

Researchers and students interested in immunology, vaccine development, and the role of MHC in disease may find this discussion relevant.

What are the Diseases involving MHC peptides ?

Where can i find about peptide vaccines ?

MHC are Major Histocompatibility Complex. This peptides are used to differentiated between self and non-self. Because MHC are part of the immune system, the disease associate with it are usualy auto-immune disease. The Sanger institute has a nice list of MHC-linked diseases. More info on MHC and Diseases

For peptide vaccine there some review if you can get access to papers

I want specifically for Class 1(confirmed) and it should involve antigen presentation.

Hey thanks.
I have decided to work on Melanoma.
Tell me how can i design a peptide vaccine "insilico" for this ?

How do you always find all these papers??

I use PubMed or Google with the right combination of words. For example I use these terms "In silico" vaccine design in pubmed for the last paper. Finding the right paper is always a matter of choosing the proper term with the search engine.

the use of quotation marks can be very usefull, google also supports the search of certain filetypes, for instance.. filetype:pdf, or site:.edu, or site:physicsforums.com
