Dispersion of light and temperature

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the dispersion of light using an equilateral prism and the temperature readings from three blackened bulb thermometers placed at different wavelengths: red, green, and violet. The primary conclusion is that the highest temperature is recorded above the red light due to the presence of infrared radiation, which contributes to increased thermal energy. The second reason for the elevated temperature remains unanswered, indicating a gap in understanding that could benefit from further exploration.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of light dispersion and the electromagnetic spectrum
  • Familiarity with thermometric measurements and their applications
  • Knowledge of infrared radiation and its effects on temperature
  • Basic principles of optics, particularly related to prisms
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties of infrared radiation and its impact on temperature measurements
  • Explore the principles of light dispersion using prisms in greater detail
  • Study the relationship between wavelength and thermal energy absorption
  • Investigate experimental setups for measuring temperature variations across the spectrum
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators in optics, and anyone interested in the thermal effects of light dispersion through prisms.

In a question about dispersion using an equilateral prism, three blackened bulb thermometers were used. One was placed above the red light, one on the green light and the last one below the violet light.

The question was ...

Give 2 reasons why the highest temperature would be recorded above the red light.

My guess is...

Reason 1: There is the presence of infrared radiation which causes a temperature increase.
Reason 2: ?

Any help please?

Regards.
