Displacement gradient same as strain?

Click For Summary
The displacement gradient, represented as du/dx, is not the same as strain, despite initial assumptions. Strain is a measure of deformation representing the displacement between particles in a material body, while the displacement gradient describes the rate of change of displacement in a given direction. The confusion arises from the nuanced differences in their definitions and applications in material science. Clarification on the context of the comment that sparked the confusion is sought, indicating a need for deeper understanding. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for accurate analysis in mechanics and materials.

Hi, is displacement gradient du/dx same as strain? i though it would be until someone made a comment that they are not the same thing and now I am confused.

Displacement gradient is the same as strain. Who made the comment and what was the context?

What mathematics software should engineering students use? Is it correct that much of the engineering industry relies on MATLAB, making it the tool many graduates will encounter in professional settings? How does SageMath compare? It is a free package that supports both numerical and symbolic computation and can be installed on various platforms. Could it become more widely used because it is freely available? I am an academic who has taught engineering mathematics, and taught the...
