root cells have a higher mitochondrial density than mesophyll cells.

Not sure about onions either. If it is underground, there would be no chlor, but if it has stems rising above ground, then yes. Picture a green onion for example. Then green part is the steam, which is above ground, which has chlor. The onion part is under the ground with the roots.
