SUMMARY

The term "drogued drifters" refers to oceanographic instruments equipped with a drogue, which is a device designed to enhance the drifter's ability to follow ocean currents at specific depths. Unlike undrogued drifters, which are influenced more by surface winds, drogued drifters are stabilized by a drogue that acts like a sea anchor, allowing for more accurate data collection on current patterns. The discussion highlights the differences between drogued and undrogued systems, emphasizing the importance of depth control in oceanographic research.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of oceanographic terminology
  • Familiarity with drifter technology
  • Knowledge of current measurement techniques
  • Basic concepts of environmental physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the design and function of oceanographic drogues
  • Explore the differences between drogued and undrogued drifters
  • Study the impact of depth on current measurements
  • Review the NOAA paper on drifter technology and methodologies
USEFUL FOR

Environmental physicists, oceanographers, and researchers involved in marine data collection and analysis will benefit from this discussion.

Hey guys,
I am not sure if this is the right forum for this question.
So I started to read some papers for my master thesis in environmental physics (no idea if this is the correct translation) and there they talked about "drogued" drifters and "undrogued" drifters in the ocean, from which they got some data. Can somebody explain to me what "drogued" means ? I tried to look it up, but all I find is the translation of a french word.
Hope you can help me,
ATY

If I say, "Air or wind blown," and, "Sea anchor," to you ...?

It's just what the previous posters have been talking about. The drogue is a big hole-y sock that makes the drifter tend to follow the currents at whatever depth the drogue is deployed at. Some more sophisticated systems deliberately change depth to "ride" the currents at different depths.
