Egg Drop Contest for Science Survivor

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a science contest where participants must design a device to protect a raw egg from breaking during a drop from a height of 4-5 meters. The focus is on utilizing specific materials provided, with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness and structural integrity.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • The original poster (OP) outlines the materials available and the rules for the egg drop contest, emphasizing the need for a design that is both effective and inexpensive.
  • Some participants suggest that maximizing the use of newspaper could be a strategic approach to cushion the egg during the fall.
  • There is confusion among participants regarding the cost system, with one participant questioning the purpose of the costs associated with materials.
  • Another participant references a game, "Armadillo Run," suggesting that the costs are part of a point system that rewards cost-effective designs.
  • Some participants express uncertainty about the OP's intentions and the overall goal of the contest.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the interpretation of the cost system and its implications for design strategy. There is no consensus on the best approach to take for the egg drop challenge.

Contextual Notes

Participants have varying levels of familiarity with the contest rules and the game referenced, which may affect their contributions and understanding of the task.

Info coming soon, have to go to lunch.
-----
Materials we are Given:
Raw Egg
2 Full Sheets of Newspaper
2 Rubber Bands
6 Toothpicks
Glue (Unlimited)
-----
You can only use materials from parts department. Materials cannot be returned.
You must eb able to take capsule apart during class to insert egg given by teacher.
A portion of an egg must be showing.
Must survive a high drop from 4-5 meters. (NOT! From a football stadium bleachers.)
-----
Items Costs:
Newspaper (Maximum 2 full sheets)
Full $1000
Half $500
Quarter $250

String (Maximum of 2 M or 20 DM)
Per decimeter (1 DM = 0.1M) $100

Rubber Bands (Maximum 2)
Per Rubber Band $500

Paper Clips (Maximum 2)
Per Paper Clip $500

Toothpicks (Maximum 6)
Per Toothpick $100

Glue
Unlimited NO CHARGE!
-----
Now the goal I am trying to achieve is to build the cheapest and most effective egg dropper. (THE GROUP HAVING AN UNCRACKED EGG AND MOST INEXPENSIVE VEHICLE WINS!) I will take a picture of the studim bleachers today after school and upload the picture afterwards. Thanks you guys if you can help! <3

What the heck...?

:confused::confused::confused:

Just buy up all of the newspaper, as this is the only allotted material that can be used to cushion the fall. Then everyone else will be destined to failure

Ever played Armadillo Run? The costs are just a sort of point system. The more cost effective the design the better.

Never played it or even heard of it, but it looks pretty cool. I'll definitely give it a try.Still don't know what the OP is up to though...
