SUMMARY

The discussion identifies a typographical error in Sean Carroll's Lecture Notes on General Relativity, specifically on page 186. The error pertains to the line element expressed in both ##\tilde{u}## and ##\tilde{v}## coordinates, where a crucial minus sign is missing. Additionally, the expression for the product of differentials is incorrectly presented as ##(d\tilde{u} d\tilde{v}+d\tilde{v}d\tilde{u})/2## instead of the correct form ##d\tilde{u} d\tilde{v}##. This correction is essential for accurate understanding of the material.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with General Relativity concepts
  • Understanding of differential geometry
  • Knowledge of line elements in coordinate systems
  • Ability to interpret mathematical notation in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Review the corrected version of equation 7.73 in Carroll's Lecture Notes on General Relativity
  • Study the implications of line elements in different coordinate systems
  • Explore the role of differential forms in General Relativity
  • Investigate common typographical errors in physics literature
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, particularly those studying General Relativity, educators reviewing lecture materials, and anyone interested in the accuracy of scientific texts.

Mistake in Carroll's Notes?

On the page 186 of Lecture Notes on General Relativity, where he writes the line element in both ##\tilde{u}## and ##\tilde{v}## coordinates , I think he missed a minus sign. Can someone check it, please?

Also, why he writes ##(d\tilde{u} d\tilde{v}+d\tilde{v}d\tilde{u})/2## instead of ##d\tilde{u} d\tilde{v}##?

Yes, that's a typo. The first term in equation 7.73 on page 186 should be negative.
