Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the recent eruption of Mount Aso in Kyushu, Japan, including its implications for tourism and local residents. Participants share updates on volcanic activity, safety measures, and the accessibility of the area during the eruption.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note that Japan has issued warnings for tourists to avoid Mount Aso due to its recent eruption, which has produced significant smoke and ash.
  • Participants discuss the current restrictions on accessing the crater, highlighting a no-entry zone that extends two kilometers from the crater due to volcanic activity.
  • There is mention of the historical context of Mount Aso's eruptions, with references to its explosive activity since 1980.
  • Some participants express concern about the potential for further eruptions and the safety of residents living near the volcano.
  • One participant shares that the USGS network has not detected significant seismic activity related to the eruption.
  • Another participant points out that even when the area is open, gases can be hazardous, particularly for individuals with respiratory issues.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the current risks associated with the eruption and the restrictions in place for tourists. However, there are varying opinions on the implications of the eruption for future activity and safety.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of detailed seismic data from the USGS regarding the eruption's activity and the potential for further eruptions, which remains uncertain.

Japan warns tourists on Mount Aso after eruption
http://news.yahoo.com/japan-warns-tourists-mount-aso-eruption-031922592.html#
Japan on Monday warned tourists to keep away from popular Mount Aso after it began belching smoke and ash into the air, the latest eruption in one of the world's most volcanically active countries.
. . . .
The 1,592-metre (5,253-foot) Aso, a popular tourist spot, has been rumbling into life since last year and in August the meteorological agency issued an alert after picking up increasing seismic activity around the volcano Sakurajima, to the south.

Apparently folks can tour the crater - when it is not erupting.

@davenn picking anything up?

Hi Greg,

had to look to see where in Japan it was ... middle of Kyushu
No nothing here and the USGS network hasn't picked up anything significant either

So the mid-eruption sightseeing atop the peak is out then?

Due to volcanic activity, a no-entry zone is currently maintained that stretches two kilometers from the crater and results in the closure of the ropeway, road and hiking trails to the crater. The road towards the crater is open as far as Kusasenri-ga-hama.

"Even when the area around the summit is open, gases can be intense, and people with respiratory problems should refrain from approaching the crater."

Residents warned as Mount Aso volcano rumbles to life

Let's hope it's just rolling over before going back to sleep...
