SUMMARY

The forum discussion focuses on estimating tracheal volume flow during inhalation for adults, specifically using a stopwatch to measure inhalation time. An average adult inhales approximately 1.1 liters of air per breath, and the diameter of the adult human trachea is 25 mm. Participants shared their calculated flow rates, with one user reporting a flow rate of 0.3 m³/s, prompting inquiries about the time measurements used for inhalation.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic respiratory physiology
  • Familiarity with volume flow rate calculations
  • Knowledge of unit conversions (liters to cubic meters)
  • Basic proficiency in using a stopwatch for timing
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the physics of respiratory flow rates
  • Learn about the impact of tracheal diameter on airflow
  • Explore methods for measuring lung capacity and airflow
  • Investigate the effects of physical activity on respiratory volume
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for physics educators, students studying respiratory physiology, and anyone interested in the mechanics of human breathing and airflow measurements.

Fun physics activity!

Homework Statement

Under the conditions of normal activity an adult inhales about 1.1l of air during each inhalation. Using a stopwtch, determien the time for one of your own inhalations (avg several to get two significant digits) and hence estimate the volume flow in m^3/s through your trachea during inhalation. the diameter of adult human trachea is 25mm

Homework Equations

q=m^3/s

The Attempt at a Solution

What is a proper or normal average for this kind of thing? I think my answer might be off lol ! i just want to get a good average, tell me what yours is! its kinda fun isn't it!?

I got 0.3m^3/s does it make sense?

What time are you using for your inhalations?
