SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the value of pursuing a master's degree in high energy physics offered jointly by ETH Zurich and Ecole Polytechnique compared to ETH Zurich's standalone physics degree. The participant expresses a strong interest in theoretical physics, particularly in particle physics and cosmology, and seeks insights on the quality of these programs. Other programs considered include the Oxford Mathematical and Theoretical Physics master's, University of Geneva's physics master's, and University of Utrecht's theoretical physics master's. The consensus emphasizes the importance of research groups and faculty alignment over the duration and location of the programs.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of theoretical physics concepts, particularly in particle physics and cosmology.
  • Familiarity with the structure and offerings of master's programs in physics.
  • Knowledge of the reputations and research strengths of institutions like ETH Zurich, Ecole Polytechnique, and Oxford.
  • Awareness of the significance of research groups and faculty in graduate education.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the specific faculty and research groups at ETH Zurich and Ecole Polytechnique in high energy physics.
  • Explore the curriculum and research opportunities in the Oxford Mathematical and Theoretical Physics master's program.
  • Investigate the University of Geneva's physics master's program and its focus areas.
  • Examine the University of Utrecht's theoretical physics master's program for its strengths and faculty expertise.
USEFUL FOR

Prospective master's students in theoretical physics, particularly those interested in particle physics and cosmology, as well as individuals evaluating graduate programs at top institutions like ETH Zurich, Ecole Polytechnique, and Oxford.

Hello everyone,
I'm soon going to be done with my bachelor's degree, so I am looking for masters to apply to. I am quite interested in pursuing a career in theoretical physics with an interest in particle physics and cosmology. One such master's degree that caught my attention is the degree in high energy physics offered jointly by ETH Zurich and Ecole Polytechnique. My question is, is this masters degree worth it for my interests, especially over ETH's degree in physics, where I will be in one city for 1.5 year vs 2 cities for 2 years? And is ETH worth it in general, supposing that I have the money for it? (yeah, ignore the financial aspect for now and consider only degree quality)Other master's degrees I've looked into are the Oxford Mathematical and Theoretical physics master, the University of Geneva masters in physics and University of Utrecht master's in theoretical physics. If there's someone with info/reviews for these masters too, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks to everyone in advance!

All these are good universities, and I would make the decision based on groups you like to join for research.
