AI Thread Summary
Sheffield and St. Andrews are being considered for study, particularly in the fields of Finance, Chemistry, and Math. Sheffield is noted for its friendly community and decent climate, comparable to Seattle. A current master's student at Sheffield mentions a positive experience but lacks specific details on the programs of interest. There is also a suggestion to explore Imperial College for its strong reputation in sciences. The discussion invites further insights about the universities and their surrounding areas, particularly regarding community and social life.

Do any of you have experience with UK Universities? I'm looking particularly at Sheffield and St. Andrews.

If so, what did you think about the school and the community?

My interests are in Finance, Chemistry and Math.

Thank you for any insight into these schools and surrounding areas.

I can't say stuff about those particular universities, as I don't know anything about them to be honest. You'll be able to find out lots of stuff here though.

I'm currently studying at Sheffield working towards my masters in Nuclear Waste Immoblisation. The area here is great. The people are friendly, and the climate is okay... think Seattle for the climate. As for the subjects that you're interested in, I couldn't start to tell you how the programs are here. However, if you want to know more about the surrounding areas, and pubs, let me know.

You could also possibly look at Imperial college as it is one of the best for the sciences.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
