Hi.
Is there any acid that will cut through Aliuminium (1mm thin).
Is there any acid that will cut through Aliuminium (1mm thin).
Hydrochloric acid (HCl), commonly sold as muriatic acid at home improvement stores, effectively reacts with aluminum, making it suitable for etching designs into aluminum surfaces like computer cases. The acid's concentration, typically around 31% by weight, significantly influences the reaction speed. To protect areas from acid damage, users can apply stationary contact transparent plastic, cut out the desired design, and then wash the area after etching. Testing on scrap aluminum is recommended to gauge the reaction time before applying it to the final piece.
PREREQUISITESThis discussion is beneficial for DIY enthusiasts, metalworkers, and hobbyists looking to customize aluminum surfaces through etching techniques. It is particularly relevant for those interested in using acids safely and effectively for design purposes.

Intuitive said:Use Stationary contact transparent plastic over the area, then with an exacto knife cut out what design you want, then after the acid has eaten through, carefully wash the Acidic area until all acid is dissolved, Then by removing the contact plastic you will have a design left behind by the acids etching properties.
This is a technique we used for Hydrofluoric Acid on a surface to be etched.
I do not think HCL will eat the stationary Contact plastic.
Try a drop of HCL on the contact plastic adhesive and see if it reacts.![]()
and use it to make a hole in your computer.
