Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding resources for fun and engaging math problems, including logical, geometric, and algebraic challenges. Participants share various books, websites, and existing threads that contain math problems suitable for recreational purposes.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Homework-related
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest checking out 'Mathematical Puzzles: A Connoisseur's Collection' by Peter Winkler as a resource.
  • One participant mentions the existence of unsolved problems in challenge threads on the forum.
  • Martin Gardner's works are recommended for their recreational math content, with a note that some have evolved into subfields of mathematical inquiry.
  • Mosteller's '50 Challenging Problems in Probability' is highlighted as a valuable resource.
  • The weekly problems from 538's The Riddler are mentioned as fun but potentially time-consuming.
  • A link to a forum section containing open problems, including a prize for solving an origami challenge, is provided.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the value of the suggested resources, but there is no consensus on a single best source, as multiple options are presented.

Contextual Notes

Some suggestions depend on personal preferences for types of math problems, and the effectiveness of the resources may vary based on individual interests and skill levels.

Martin Gardner has some very good stuff in this vein. You should be able to pick up a book of his very cheaply or maybe find some of the old articles he wrote on the Internet. While his original writings are tagged Recreational Math, I think some of them became actual subfields of mathematical inquiry.

I am also a fan of Mosteller's 50 Challenging Problems in Probability which may be the best 5 bucks I've spent.

The weekly problems in 538's The Riddler are fun (but can end up eating up a lot more time than you budgeted):

There are a lot of open problems here:

still including, I think, a prize to whoever solves the origami challenge.

(This links is similar to but different than the one posted by @fresh_42 )

The books and the links will be enough for us. But in any case If you want to share sure, I wouldn't say no.

Thanks :)
