SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the surface area required for a 1 farad parallel plate capacitor with a separation of 2mm using the formula C = (ε₀A)/s. The value of ε₀ is given as 8.85 x 10^-12 F/m, and the separation distance s is 0.002 m. The initial calculation yielded an incorrect surface area of 225,988,700.6 square meters, which was identified as being off by a factor of 1000. Participants confirmed the formula's correctness but suggested verifying calculations with peers.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of capacitor fundamentals
  • Familiarity with the formula C = (ε₀A)/s
  • Knowledge of the permittivity of free space (ε₀)
  • Basic skills in unit conversion and dimensional analysis
NEXT STEPS
  • Review the derivation of the capacitor formula C = (ε₀A)/s
  • Learn about the implications of capacitor size on capacitance
  • Explore common mistakes in capacitor calculations
  • Investigate peer review methods for verifying physics calculations
USEFUL FOR

Students studying electrical engineering, physics enthusiasts, and anyone involved in capacitor design or analysis.

I need to find the required surface area for a 1 farad parallel plate capacitor with separation of 2mm.

I used this formula:
C=\frac{\epsilon_{0}A}{s}
E0 is 8.85x10^-12
S is 0.002 m

I got 225988700.6 square meters, which is off by a factor of 1000. Is the solution wrong, or am I?

I get basically the same answer (I use 8.854*10^-12 F/m). Is there anyone else doing this problem set that you can check answers with?
