Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around troubleshooting issues related to signing into MSN and setting a desktop background on a computer. It includes considerations of potential causes such as internet connectivity problems, account security issues, and possible virus infections.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes that the internet being down should not affect the ability to set a desktop background, suggesting that the issue may be unrelated.
  • Another participant proposes that a virus could be responsible for preventing changes to the desktop background, indicating a potential security concern.
  • A different viewpoint suggests that the inability to sign into MSN may be due to account takeover, referencing a personal experience where a similar issue occurred with a spouse's account.
  • One participant raises the possibility that prolonged inactivity could lead to the MSN account being considered inactive and potentially deleted, implying that a new account may need to be created.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the causes of the issues, with no consensus reached on the exact nature of the problems or their solutions.

Contextual Notes

There are assumptions about the state of the user's computer and account that are not fully explored, such as the specific nature of the internet issues and the potential impact of inactivity on the MSN account.

That is far too vague for anyone to give an accurate diagnosis.

The internet being down isn't going to stop you setting a desktop background.

It sounds like you've had some form of virus - some take over various controls and prevent you changing the background etc.

If you can't sign into MSN, it's possible that someone else took over your MSN account and changed the password. This exact thing happened to my wife's hotmail account. We contacted MSN Help and were able to set things right, although it took a few times. Each time my wife changed her password, the miscreant was able to change it again.

If this is your problem, here's a link that might help:

Your internet has been down for 3 months?
Doesn't sound like an ISP problem, rather a subscriber issue.
After some set period of inactivity(it used to be 30 days, now I think it's 90) your original MSN account is considered "inactive" and thus deleted.

You will need to sign-up with a new account.
