SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the theoretical frequency of bamboo flutes based on their length and diameter. Participants emphasize the need for an equation that incorporates both flute length and diameter to accurately predict sound frequency. The importance of practical experimentation with flutes of varying diameters but the same length is highlighted as a method for understanding acoustic properties. The conversation suggests that empirical testing is essential for achieving desired sound frequencies in bamboo flutes.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic acoustics principles
  • Familiarity with the physics of sound waves
  • Knowledge of flute construction and design
  • Experience with practical experimentation in physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the equation for calculating frequency in cylindrical tubes, such as the "open pipe frequency formula."
  • Explore the effects of diameter on sound frequency in wind instruments.
  • Conduct experiments with bamboo flutes of varying diameters to observe frequency changes.
  • Study the impact of material properties on sound production in musical instruments.
USEFUL FOR

Musicians, physics students, and hobbyists interested in instrument design and sound acoustics will benefit from this discussion.

Dear all,

I have been attempting to create a range of bamboo flutes with different lengths for my physics practical. I am trying to calculate the theoretical frequency that should be produced by a particular length of flute, but all my flutes have different diamaters and I am searching for an equation that takes into account the diameter of the flute as well as the length of the flute to produce a particular frequency. Can anyone help me?

As this is a practical project, have you experimented with flutes of the same length and different diameters?

Ah! Well that is one I have not tried.
