I know this is probably a very simple question, that I should know the answer to, but nevertheless. I labeled the gears (sprockets) in this picture 1,2,3 and 4. Is this gear train compound? Or are the small gears just idler gears? Since the small gear (2) is on the same shaft as gear (3) I think this is compound, but wanted to ask any way? Thanks in advanced!

Yes, it is a compound gear train.
I see no idler gears. Every gear wheel is there for a purpose.

The weight moves slowly with high torque. That rate is increased upwards through each shaft to the escapement at the top, where the torque has been reduced, proportionally, to that needed to keep the clock running.
