Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a multiple-choice question related to genetic sequences and the effects of restriction enzymes, specifically focusing on the cleavage of a given DNA sequence and the resulting structural characteristics. The scope includes homework-related inquiries and conceptual understanding of molecular biology.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about the question's wording and suggests that the answer could be either A (3' overhang) or D (Any of these).
  • Another participant emphasizes the importance of understanding how restriction enzymes function and implies that the answer can be deduced from the question itself.
  • A different participant asserts that the answer is a 5' overhang based on their prior experience with a similar question but questions whether a 3' overhang could also be possible.
  • One participant suggests that answering their question could help clarify the original inquiry.
  • A later reply indicates that the participant has gained understanding from the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus; there are competing views regarding the correct answer to the question, with some believing it is a 5' overhang while others consider the possibility of a 3' overhang or other options.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights potential ambiguities in the question's phrasing and the assumptions about the enzyme's cutting mechanism that may not be explicitly stated.

Who May Find This Useful

Students studying molecular biology, particularly those preparing for exams involving genetic sequences and restriction enzymes.

Homework Statement

5) Examine the following sequence:
5' GAATTC 3'
3' CTTAAG 5'
If this sequence was disgested with an enzyme (ex. ECOri) which cut between the guanine and adenine bases on which would it have?
A) 3' overhang
B) Blunt ends
C) 5' overhang
D) Any of these

The Attempt at a Solution

I'm doing a little prep-work before tackling this unit in class.
I honestly do not understand what this questoin means too well(sentence is poorly structured?)
BUt i think its either A or D. If anyone could enlighten me that would be great(as to what is goign on here)

Physics news on Phys.org
The link is necessary knowledge but the answer is perfectly easily deducible just from the information in the question.
If the enzyme cleaves as stated what structure will you be left with after it has acted and what description does that fit?

I believe it is a 5' overhang. I put this answer on my test(exact same questoin for some reason)
and I got it right. But can it not be a 3' overhang as well?

If you answer my question you will find it helps answer yours.

Alright I think i got it now. Thanks for the help!
